The dominant colour that you will choose for your kid’s room will most likely be one of the first design choices you will make before thinking about the bedding and other accessories. It could be really easy - pink for a girl and blue for a boy. But you might want to step out of the comfort zone and create a unique environment for your little one. When we imagine grown-up rooms then we think of all sorts of colours, so why shouldn’t we do the same for kids’ rooms? Well, luckily, that is actually what is happening more and more nowadays – little ones are getting “grown-up” colours in their rooms which don’t look out of place at all but just a little bit more original and special.

GREENS

You probably know that Pantone Greenery is the colour of the year but it hasn’t been seen that much in kid’s rooms this year. In fact we have seen more unexpected “old-fashioned” greens, like pine green, indigo, vervena and teal green leaning towards blue. Whereas vervena green is quite a safe choice, teal greens are a bit more daring as we don’t know yet how long this trend will last - but hopefully for a while as it looks amazing. Surprisingly, these hues have been more used for girls’ rooms than for boys’ rooms, where grass green has been a more popular choice. Of course the big plant trend that has been seen in fashion and interiors during the year influenced the kids’ room scene too.

BLACKS

The monochrome colourscheme is widely popular right now – just look at Instagram and you will quickly be immersed by this trend. But would you dare to paint a whole wall or several walls all black? Well, if you’re brave enough, you would. Few people think that such deep and “depressive” colours work in interiors, and especially not in kids’ room that are usually more cheerful and bright - but if you manage to brighten the darkness with crispy white accessories or even a few pastels or why not fluorescent ones, then you will get an original and chic nursery or kids’ room.

ALL WHITE

White not only looks clean and crisp but also gives you the possibility to experiment and change accessories often. It makes natural wood furniture and accessories look more significant even if they are very simple. Don’t forget that there are thousands of different hues in white so play around with them by creating contrasts so not everything looks like it is “floating” in the same white. Painting one accent wall in a slightly darker tone could also add some deepness to the room.

NAVY BLUE

This colour is no longer associated with the “marine-themed” kid’s room but today with modern kids’ rooms, both for girls and boys. It looks great with Scandinavian or 40’s style designed rooms that have a few natural wood furniture pieces and green accents. You can easily incorporate “adult” décor accessories, such as a graphic black rug, a gold mirror or a lamp that you can move to any area of the family’s home once your baby no longer needs the nursery and might want a more playful colour theme.

GREY WITH A POP OF COLOUR

Grey is probably the superstar colour for kid’s rooms as you can combine it with any colour in any hue or tone. It is therefore no surprise that you always find this colour when looking for kids’ furniture or wallpapers for example. Even though grey is a widely used colour for a kids’ room, you can make the room look really special by choosing grey as a backdrop colour on the walls, bedding and even on the furniture and add pops of colour on the cushions, a blanket, toy or on the lamps.
