Small family run British knitwear manufacturer, G. H. Hurt & Son, who has a long-standing connection with the Royal Family, sent the royal couple one of their Nottingham Lace Knitted Baby Shawl as a warm and sincere congratulations to TRH the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the safe arrival of Prince Louis Arthur Charles on Monday 23rd April 2018. It was identical to one William had when he was a baby was swaddled in by his mother Diana 31 years ago. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also wrapped the siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in blankets from G.H. Hurt & Son for their introductions to the world.
The choice to wrap the newborn royal in a knitted shawl from this company is in keeping with a 70-year-old tradition started by the Queen following Prince Charles' birth. The traditional lace knitwear company based in the city of Nottingham in the UK, G.H. Hurt & Son, have been creating unique and luxury women’s scarves and wraps, men’s scarves, and baby shawls since 1912.
In 1912 George Henry Hurt started the knitting business and later on his son Leslie joined the business hence the family firm began and a long tradition of fathers inviting their sons (and daughters) to share in the business in an old seed warehouse dated to 1781 in Nottingham, the present location for the working office and factory to this date.
G. H. Hurt & Son is an exception to the history of hand frame knitting machines, with thirteen still remaining in their factory and two in brilliant working order from the beginning . It is unique for a company to hold onto the antique machinery, especially when the priority lies with the modern technology advances.
The brand manufactures lacy knitted shawls, using traditional artisan techniques from start to finish providing you, as our customer, with a beautiful, hand-finished shawl. Each of their shawls travels through a journey at our Shawl Factory in Chilwell, Nottingham taking two days to produce and involving eight pairs of technically skilled hands…
Their traditional lace knitting techniques combined with the softest wool and cashmere allow them to create beautiful and unique designs that can be treasured and handed down through the family for many years to come.
