PANTONE's color of the year 2018 is...

"Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now."

Each year since 1999, the famous Pantone Color Institute reveals its Color of the year. After Greenery for 2017, Ultra Violet is honored this year- PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet to be more precise. The color is ambiguous: neither warm nor cool, Ultra Violet can be either one or the other depending on the color you put next to it. Ultra Violet has a spiritual dimension as well: it reminds us of peacefulness, finesse and imagination.

Originality, ingenuity, visionary thinking and non-conformity are as many adjectives used to define Ultra Violet. In the pop culture, “Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront (…) as personal expressions of individuality.

Some say that Pantone’s choice is also political. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, says that “the Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.
The website Mashable goes a little bit further in the interpretation quoting “the color has a lot of resonance now“, referring to the women’s fight for equality.

Be prepared to see Ultra Violet everywhere this year, from catwalks to home decor, including beauty. Go purple!
